Lab lecture was on Pavia experiment 6D column chromatography. We also had a segment of pet sharing at the end of the morning lab, thanks in part ot my dog Finley not being able to control his little doggy self while someone in the neighborhood used a leaf blower.

Lap lecture was on distillation. An overview of the physical description of the boiling process, liquid composition vs. vapor composition for a two component mixture and Raoult's Law was presented. Also presented was an overview of the different types of distillation equipment, how to set up that equipment and practical aspects of running a distillation.

In this lecture we discussed azeotropes, why they exist, differences between repulsive and attractive forces giving rise to different types of azeotropes, as well as how to use azeotropes to remove water during a chemical reaction - Dean Stark Trap. We discussed vacuum distillation set up and equipment. We also reviewed gas chromatography and the components and working of a Gow-Mac GC.

The synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid was presented. In addition to the synthesis a history of the molecule was presented as well as mode of action. In discussing the reaction, we looked at the stoichiometry and discussed ways to improve the synthesis.

This was the second day on the Acetylsalicylic acid synthesis lab. Here we presented the ideas of characterization of products vs. analysis of purity. Discussion revolved around characterizing the product by melting point, ferric chloride test, and FTIR spectroscopy. Possible outcomes were discussed as well as the need for all characterization data to agree and what to look for in the data.

The extraction of caffeine from black tea was presented. We looked at two different types of isolation, classical solvent extraction with methylene chloride and a solid phase extraction using C18-silica gel. The crude caffeine was further purified by sublimation and characterized by closed tube melting point determination and solid KBr FTIR spectroscopy.
